About VIT, Vellore Campus

Established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, VIT was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution known as Vellore Engineering College. In 2001, the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development granted it University status. The University is led by its founder and Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Tamil Nadu Government. In recognition of his contributions to providing world-class education in India, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by West Virginia University, USA. The leadership team includes Vice-Presidents Mr. Sankar Viswanathan, Dr. Sekar Viswanathan, and Dr. G.V. Selvam; Vice-Chancellor Dr. V. S. Kanchana Bhaaskaran; and Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Partha Sharathi Mallick.
