About Madras Christian College, Chennai

Madras Christian College originated from the General Assembly School, established by Rev. John Anderson, a Church of Scotland missionary, on April 3, 1837. Anderson played a pivotal role in pioneering English-medium education in South India, with the support of Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood, and Margaret Locher Anderson. In 1862, Rev. William Miller joined and elevated the school to college status by introducing F.A. and B.A. courses in 1865 and 1867. On January 1, 1877, with collaboration from other Protestant missions in Madras, Miller renamed the institution to ‘Madras Christian College.’ His ambitious academic vision, bolstered by generous support from family, alumni, and the Madras Government, facilitated the construction of significant college buildings and student hostels near the Madras High Court. Distinguished successors, including Professor Skinner, Rev. Dr. E.M. Macphail, Rev. Dr. Meston, and Rev. Dr. Hogg, followed Rev. Dr. Miller’s leadership.
