In 1910, the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal, which managed the Bengal Technical Institute (later known as the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal), merged with NCE. Following the merger, NCE oversaw the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal, which by 1940 operated almost as a university. After India gained independence, the Government of West Bengal, with approval from the Government of India, enacted legislation to officially establish Jadavpur University on December 24, 1955.
