About IIT, Kharagpur

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) serves as a bridge between India’s ancient wisdom and modern technology. It began its journey in 1951 at the historic Hijli Detention Camp, where freedom fighters once toiled for India’s independence. This unique institution started with 224 students, 42 teachers, and 10 departments, with classes and offices housed in the camp’s historic buildings.

Over time, IIT Kharagpur expanded into a sprawling 2,100-acre, tree-lined campus, featuring 18 academic departments, five centers of excellence, and a self-contained township of over 15,000 residents. Today, it boasts around 550 faculty members, 1,700 employees, and 9,000 students, continuing its legacy of excellence and growth.
