Hindustan College of Engineering, established in 1985, was granted "University Status" by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India, under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, starting from the academic year 2008-09. It was then renamed Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS).
