About Delhi Technological University
Delhi Technological University (DTU) has a distinguished legacy of delivering high-quality education while fostering research and entrepreneurship for more than eight decades. Established in 1941, the institution originally known as Delhi Polytechnic was created to meet the growing demand for skilled technical professionals in India. With a tradition of over 82 years of excellence in engineering and technology education, research, and innovation, DTU was founded to provide practical experience alongside solid theoretical knowledge.
The institution was set up at the historic Kashmere Gate campus as a response to the recommendations of the 1938 Wood and Abott Committee. It began as a multidisciplinary institution offering a wide range of programs in engineering, technology, arts, sculpture, architecture, pharmacy, and commerce. The national diploma awarded by the institution was recognized as equivalent to a degree for employment purposes.
In 1952, the college became affiliated with the University of Delhi and began offering formal degree-level programs. Over time, several departments evolved into prominent institutions, such as the Department of Architecture, which later became the School of Planning and Architecture (now a Deemed University of National Importance), and the Department of Arts and Sculpture, which became the College of Arts. The Departments of Chemical Technology and Textile Technology were relocated to form the foundation of what would become IIT Delhi at its new Hauz Khas campus. The Department of Commerce was eventually phased out, leading to the establishment of the Faculty of Management Studies at the University of Delhi by Professor A. Das Gupta, a faculty member of DCE.
